"I would say that what you have is a chalk line. The modern ones hold blue chalk and string that you snap a straight line on wood. Here are a couple of pictures of some antique wooden ones."

Any ideas??

Hello,  I recently picked this up at an auction and really have no clue as to what it is.  The piece is made of oak with the "reel" being maple(?) and sports a really cool whale shaped crank for the "reel".  Piec is approx 8" long and 3 1/2" tall X 3 1/2" wide.  Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, AkrodogSee More
