1/2/2011 Happy New Year

Howdy!I hope you all are having a terrific year so far. I know it's going to take me a while to stop writing "2010" on everything!Tonight, we're taking down the tree and putting it out for recycling pickup in the morning. The holidays are officially over for us, but that's OK. Time to relax and do the things we love best... reading, antiquing, writing and having quiet family times with just the three of us (soon to be four!)Last year, I resolved to never pass up the "ones that get away." You…See More

12/26/2010 Post-holiday Wrap-up

Howdy there!Hope you enjoyed your holidays, whichever ones you celebrate (or don't). Here in Antiquary Kat land, we have piles of presents to sort through, thank-you notes to write an tree needles to vacuum. Most of the presents, of course, are Ruby's. And because. Our house is so small and cozy, we try to avoid "little plastic bits" at all costs.Luckily among the toy selections this year were some retro classics. Of course, Lincoln Logs, now touted as "America's toy" was among them. Lincoln…See More

12/18/2010 Deck the Halls

Howdy, friends! How's this for antiquary? I'm sitting on the sofa, typing this post on my new iPad. Ridiculous, I know. I must admit I haven't mastered the touch keypad -- not by a long shot! Since I'm so new at this device, if you have an iPad, what are some useful apps for antiquers?Yesterday, the McKerrow clan piled in the car and headed over to Clarks Elioak Farm in Ellicott City. In addition to cutting down our holiday tree, we were able to wander the farm's collection of vintage exhibits…See More

12/8/2010 Back to Normal

Hey there, friends!Sorry I've been so long absent. I've been down for the count with some sort of virus. The past week, I've done not much but sleep, drink Gatorade and read.I've read a lot -- for some reason, I was on a real Victorian ghost story kick. I know I've blogged recently about being a big fan of Edwardian ghost story author M.R. James. If you like old things, his works could hold a certain fascination. The ghosts or demons in the stories usually are connected with some old object --…See More

11/28/2010 Winter's Here

Isn't it weird how as soon as Thanksgiving has come and gone, winter kicks in full force? Our friends on the West Coast are already shoveling snow, and we have frost in the morning. The leaves are nearly all off the trees. The sky's that odd pink-gold color at sunset.Tonight, we're heading into the city to check out the Miracle on 34th Street. Every year, one block in the picturesque neighborhood of Hampden decorates to the extreme. Millions of Christmas lights, model trains, hubcap trees…See More

11/26/2010 Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays to you and yours!I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Our brunch went without a hitch. The Old Curiosity Shop plates worked very well, and they looked pretty great at the set table. My folks brought their brunch items in Pyrex Early American bowls -- which they left, of course!Did you read this article in the Associated Press?…See More

11/21/2010 Gearing up for Thanksgiving

Hi there, all!Well, the big day is nearly here... Thanksgiving, of course. It's one of my favorite holidays, although I don't eat Turkey. I like the big meal with family and friends. I like meeting up late at night with a friend to get a jump on Black Friday, I must admit. And I like getting the house ready.Well, I just about made my Old Curiosity Shop goal. Even though I don't have 12 full place settings, I have 12 dinner plates, and enough serving pieces. That's good enough for me! I also…See More

Dear Kat,
It's so nice to meet someone who also collects Victorian Mourning jewelry.
One of my unique Victorian programs that I present is Victorian Fashions & Traditions. I dress in full Widows Weeds and have the opportunity to wear some of my hair work pieces.

When I become a bit more acquainted with my camera features I will take pics of my mourning jewelry. I am not satisfied with the picture quality yet.

Perhaps you might be interested in my Mourning article-

Hi Katherine! Glad to have you aboard. I am new to all of this on line social networking and don't see how I can possibly keep up! My nightmare was having to leave Ebay after 12 years and am hoping to get some sales on Bonanzle. Mourning jewelry!!! Wow! I have two books on that as we had conducted an estate sale where there were some brooches and the interest was great. As a genealogist I am interested in prayer cards. I don't think folks know what great finds are among this genre. Off to the challenge here. Thanks so much for the friend invite! Sincerely, Jorijo (Marjorie)
