"They appear to be metal buttons.  They almost look like rivits.  The other end looks like the part showing and it looks like the leather was cut and the button inserted into the cut. "

"You will notice that my case has "buttons" on the side.  I don't know if they were used to attach the case to a belt, or would have been there to attach a leather strap."
